Sam F. Carter Memorial Fund
Sam F. Carter October 30, 1952 – October 7, 2019
In 2015, Sam Carter moved with his wife, Debbie to St. Petersburg from the Washington DC area. Through the years, Sam’s sister Carol Carter, a renowned watercolorist, had inspired Sam to become a supporter and patron of the arts so it was no surprise that they quickly began to explore the many artistic venues that St. Petersburg offers. They loved both the visual and performing arts. Sam and Debbie were season ticket holders at American Stage, enjoyed St. Petersburg Opera and were regular attendees at Second Saturday Art Walk. They especially had a soft spot for the Warehouse Arts District Association, WADA.
Because he was an engineer, Sam was curious by nature and intrigued by the process of art creation. He spent time with Mark Aeling, sculptor and Wendy Durand, ceramicist to better understand how art is formed. For instance, he was fascinated how Wendy went about reclaiming clay. He and Debbie began collecting work of local artists also. They delighted in having those works prominently shown in their home in South East St. Petersburg.
Sam was also the go-to person in his neighborhood. If he was headed out to Lowe’s or Home Depot, he often asked an older neighbor if he could bring anything back for her. As one neighbor said recently, “Sam was the glue in our small community”.
Sam’s wife Debbie and his sister Carol are asking those who would like to cherish his memory to consider making a donation to the Warehouse Arts District Association. Sam wanted the St. Petersburg arts community to thrive and grow and a donation to WADA will help make this happen.
Thank You
Debbie Nichols and Carol Carter
